I love that I’ve been up for like 40 hours but I am actually not crazy tired. I woke up Thursday morning at 10:30…it is now Saturday morning almost 1:50am. Pulled an all nighter for midterms back to back today and I’m crazy so I’m still awake now, clearly. I predicted sleeping like a rock…which I probably should go do now. Work tomorrow woot!

I never thought much about this but when I wracked my brain, this came to my head. The lyrics actually don’t really suit a wedding now that I check LOL but I’ve always liked Byul and this is the first song I ever heard from her back when Full House starring Rain and Song Hye Kyo aired. It was my first proper kdrama too hehe. So I guess since the lyrics aren’t too suitable for marriage, I’d choose Love You 愛你 by Kimberley Chen.

I think it’s been a while since I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated a drama this much. I know I often watch dramas (Korean ones, in particular) for the purpose of entertainment, but tvN’s currently airing Reply 1997 (or Answer Me 1997) has been amazing to watch. The story revolves around a group of friends who meet up for the high school reunion and reflect upon their growth in the 90s from the age of 18. Probably because I’m a 90s kid, and that 18 wasn’t long ago for me, I appreciate it that much more. My parents dislike the show, but I’m not surprised.
It can be confusing at times due to the flashbacks, but it’s these flashbacks from present time that slowly unravel how each character ended up, and whom ended up with a relationship with whom. It’s touching, witty, and funny. It perfectly reflects the average 18 year old growing up; the craziness of fangirls for boybands (in this case, H.O.T./Sechs Kies), the worries, the friendships, dealing with parents, and relationships. That awkward transition stage. Those secret loves. First loves. The heartbreaking moments.
I think most people watching are anxiously waiting to discover whom Shi-won (lead girl played by Eunji from girl group APink) ended up marrying, and how Joonhee’s (played by Hoya from Infinite) friendship with/love for Yoonjae (lead boy played by Seo In Guk) turned out. I could feel my heart break for Joonhee every episode. Just the looks and small actions reflected so much. In Korea, homosexuality is not an easy thing to discuss, and I love how the producer and writer approached the love Joonhee has for his friend Yoonjae. Shin PD: “Although we started off like that we didn’t start off with a certain type of ‘homosexuality.’ It was just ‘Kang Junhee likes Yoon Yoonjae,’ it was not the idea of a boy liking a boy. Never once did we say that it was about ‘homosexuality’ or about being ‘gay.’ Even during our staff meeting we only said ‘Junhee likes Yoonjae..’ and the words ‘homosexuality’ or ‘gay’ never came out. The story that we wanted to tell was ‘so and so likes so and so.’ (http://omonatheydidnt.livejournal.com/9769637.html#ixzz25Grt0Hh4) I think in the end, that’s really what it should be about. It’s about the matter of love, not the matter of gender.
Whoever casted the actors; you are amazing. Everyone has done such an awesome job. Seo In Guk is really great as Yoonjae. I’m glad he’s receiving the attention he deserves, and hopefully people will poke more into his music because it is fantastic! And as I’ve mentioned before, the subtle looks, smiles, and behaviours of Joonhee reflect so much, thanks to Hoya. I’m impressed with Eunji’s acting as well. I freaking love that Eun Ji Won (ex-member of Sechs Kies!!) was casted as one of the friends and pokes fun of his 90s idol self.
tvN has been releasing a ton of awesome shows this year, but Reply 1997 knocks them all out of the park. God I can foresee blubbering and tears from me as the next episodes roll on…only 16 episodes and episode 11 and 12 just aired this week! Speaking of which, off to watch!

edit: EPISODE 12 ZOMG. ALL MY FEELS. GUUUH MY HEART BREAKS FOR YOONJAE. Freaking cried when he was running like mad barefoot on the streets to save Shiwon from the creeper following her T.T Then that noraebang confession…UGH.
Relationships have levels, mine with Yoon Jae was one of the easiest. A relationship that was easy to explain and easy to maintain, a casual relationship between old friends. But that day I realized something, ours could become one of the hardest.
